Stop coming over top golf swing – Fix slice

classic golf swing

To stop coming over the top golf swing is to correct a slice in the golf swing, and pulled golf shots, too.  That all-too-common over the top move creates the opposite of the desired inside to out swing path in golf.

BEFORE focusing on golf swing mechanics as listed below needed to hit a draw shot to fix the slice golf swing…

  • the right elbow in the golf swing, and
  • left forearm supination in the golf swing.

…FIRST a mental awakening is required before mechanics can be changed from the common outside to inside swing path which produces slices AND pulls:

  • actually, just about every fault in the golf swing comes from a faulty visualization of what is actually supposed to happen at impact.
  • fixing a faulty understanding of impact is the first step to fixing ANY fault
  • …because if the mind isn’t on board with the desired interaction between the club face and the ball, then the mind will block any efforts to make the physical changes required for proper impact.

The most common ugly golf shots arise from the over-the-top move because this is the most common manifestation of a faulty understanding of impact:

  • fat shots are caused by over-the-top as that move makes the angle of attack into impact too steep…
  • and thin shots are caused by over-the-top as the golfer tries to come out of a too-steep attack angle at the last micro second before impact with an upward move into the ball [so as to avoid the fat shot, e.g., hitting the turf first and then the ball]…
  • …that upward attack angle into the ball invariably exposes the leading edge of the club face to the ball for the all-too-common skulled, or thin, “worm-burner” shot.

Are you ready to experience an epiphany?

In short, you’ll need an epiphany on a mental level before your mind will allow you to make physical changes;

  • I promise you will have such an epiphany if you take the time to absorb the videos and text herein.
  • be warned – your survival instincts want to protect you from using the energy it will take to reprogram your brain’s “software” to accept a reality that is opposite of the mind’s simple, yet flawed, logic.
    • that flawed logic is the brick wall between you and the golf ball striking skills that will make golf a game of hitting golf shots versus a game of “playing golf swings”.
    • there is no golf swing per se – the swing is simply a result of the intention to hit the ball.
    • hitting the ball is all about throwing the club head at the ball from the inside.

If somehow you don’t experience your epiphany after the first time through this post, then read and watch it again;

  • I guarantee that if you don’t “get it”, that frustration will continue to spoil your golf journey.
  • likewise, when you do “get it”, then you will be on the path to enjoying the hit and playing golf shots instead of “playing golf swings”.

Golf is a 2-target game

You see, golf is a 2-target sport:

  1. there is the ball’s intended target [green, fairway, flag, et al]; this is the red TARGET LINE
  2. then there is the club head’s target which is the ball
  3. the club head approaches the ball from the green inside-to-out HIT LINE
  4. that HIT LINE is diagonal to the red TARGET LINE pictured in the video still shot below.
fix-slice-with-driver
Driving the club face down the target line is the COMMON flawed logic that leads to the COMMON slice.
how-to-fix-my-slice-with-the-driver
This 2-minute video features Peter Croker demonstrating the visual reorientation required to turn your slice into a draw ball.

The mind’s simple-yet-flawed logic must be replaced with an epiphany

To cure over top swing requires accepting the counter intuitive facts shown in the hyperlinked video with slow motion of impact zone, that is [see slow motion video of impact in next section below]:

  1. to hit the ball straight requires the club head to swing in a circle around the body, and
  2. to hit a grounded ball up in the air requires descending blow.

    golf-smash-factor
Club face descending upon ball to compress the ball against turf; golf smash factor caught in the act.

smash-factor-golf
Divot comes AFTER ball is compressed. This imparts backspin needed for predictable trajectory and tight flight pattern [much like the spiral effect on a well thrown football].

More in-depth revisualization – REALLY see and understand impact to cure slice golf swing

The goal of MyInstinctiveGolf is to make golf a reflex sport where the proper mechanics are simply a result of the intention to hit the ball.

  1. Job #1 is to be absolutely clear about the intention of impact so that your mind, hands and body can intelligently reverse engineer on a subconscious level what needs to be done in order to be successful.

    compressing-golf-ball-impact
This 2-minute video narrated by Peter Croker CLEARLY shows interaction between the club face and ball to create COMPRESSION and BACKSPIN.

Let’s review

  • golf is a 2-target sport [inside-to-out HIT LINE diagonal to the TARGET LINE]
  • the club face descends upon the ball [to COMPRESS it and impart BACKSPIN]

It takes real study to overcome the counter intuitive reality of the above concepts.

Without such an epiphany your mind’s misguided beliefs will manifest as hand and body movements [typically the over the top move] that will make it impossible to hit successful shots with the consistency needed to break 80 consistently.

Saturate your logical and subconscious mind with the counter intuitive concepts introduced so far –

  • because what I’m about to show you about the classic golf swing of legendary ball strikers like Ben Hogan and my mentor, Peter Croker, PGA Australia will otherwise be difficult to comprehend and accept.

This is how you’ll develop a dependable golf swing controlled by your thought-free sensory motor system versus your cognitive thinking [which invites hoping-worrying] system.

  • Please click to see my in-depth Article including short video segments, “Subconscious Golf [Counter-Intuitive] Battles You Must Win” for more about how your logic and thinking are working against you.
  • Once you shed light on what hitting the golf ball is REALLY all about, then the changes you need to make become almost obvious and the road to making those changes is clear.
  • That is, the somewhat odd [illogical] movements made in a dependable golf swing won’t seem odd anymore because you’ll understand the absolute necessity for such movements…
  • ,,,and your mind will allow you to make those once unnatural movements seem natural in fairly short order with my training.

Now, and only now, with the clarity of a CORRECT intention in place…

…can one begin to understand the otherwise seemingly strange movements and intentions that will turn the slice-producing and pull-producing over the top [outside to in swing path] move…

…into a draw-producing inside to out downswing on a HIT LINE that is diagonal to the TARGET LINE.

You can see this TARGET LINE versus the diagonal [inside-to-out] HIT LINE in the picture below of Peter Croker, PGA Australia.

This “direction of throw” [heel-hosel directed right at the ball] is required in order to incite the protective instincts in the left elbow and to naturally cause the sequence of kinesiology events [supination-ulnar deviation-flex] needed for the proper yet counter-intuitive impact.

left-hand-release-in-golf-swing
Peter Croker shows the draw-producing inside to out downswing on a HIT LINE that is diagonal to the TARGET LINE.

You can see now that if the first thing I mentioned in this post to cure a slice would be to throw the heel of the club head at the ball that you’d think I was preaching some crazy new-fangled rogue approach;

  • when in fact such an intention is the cornerstone of the classic golf swing…probably going back to the 1500s.
  • throwing the heel at the ball from the top is the classic way to ensure an inside-to-out DIRECTION OF HIT.
  • throwing the heel-hosel at the ball from our well-defined take-back and backswing to “Position A” where the right wrist is bent [not cocked] in the classic “drink tray waiter” condition.
  • remember, the DIRECTION OF HIT, or HIT LINE, is related to the ball “Position B” being the club head’s target.
  • the TARGET LINE is the ball’s target.
  • the TARGET LINE is NOT the club head’s target.

I cover Pete’s left hand action in more detail [and with my own insights] in my Instinctive Golf Swing video:

  • START Mark 13:25
    left-arm-golf-downswing
    A to B: Throw club head heel-first from Position A on an inside-to-out path to ball-Position B.

Okay, now that you’ve REALLY accepted a new paradigm – let’s go DEEPER

At this point you have the possibility of digesting some critical concepts that would have otherwise seemed utterly bizarre and not even worth consideration!

Hold on because things are about get even more curiouser.

For instance, let’s start with this hard-to-understand elbow-sockets-outward picture from Ben Hogan’s “Five Lessons” along with a sketch showing the elbows being pushed together by a tight band!

Ben-Hogan-golf-swing-Five-Lessons-book-
Sketch is from Ben Hogan’s classic “Five Lessons” book which is known as the bible on ball striking. The elbow sockets out and the sketched band pushing the arms together has crucial implications.

Included in the picture is a golf training aid designed to encourage pushing the elbows together and elbow sockets out.

Watching the prescribed 9 minutes of the video below will help you make sense of this Hogan pic:

  • see how critical it is to move the hands in a way that pushes the elbows together;
  • this hand-elbow action ensures a descending compressing backspin-imparting blow at impact – just like we saw in the impact slow motion video earlier!
  • see how we educate the hands to move in a way that ties in with the body’s movements;
  • this built-in syncing of hand action with body action is the key to a consistent golf swing!

Australian PGA Presentation: How to Build a Better Short Game

  • 56:20 mark leads to learning how hand action bio-mechanically [automatically] engages hip and knee action for a timing-free golf swing transition.
  • 1:03:15 mark talks-shows and references Hogan’s thick rubber band sketch pushing arms together and pushing elbow sockets out [pic-sketch above] and how the associated hand action delivers a descending compressing backspin-imparting blow at impact.

    wrist-action-in-the-golf-swing
56:20 mark leads to learning how thumbs-down hand action ties hand action to hip action.
1:03:15 mark talks-shows and references Hogan’s thick rubber band sketch pushing arms.

Again, the above 9-minute clip with Bob Ford and Pete interacting very clearly addresses the hand action that creates the elbow-s0ckets-out dynamic [arms pushed together and connected to body] action at impact…

Can you handle even more truth?!  Let’s go DEEPER still.

The above attached Hogan “Five Lessons” pic and related video above is kind of mind blowing – but I think you are “getting it” – right?

Let’s go DEEPER still to for a dynamic demonstration of the hand action in the golf swing and how to get the hands-body automatically working together.

pivot-in-the-golf-swing
See the inside-to-out right hand action that pushes the body open. This syncing between hands and body will be another epiphany for at least 95% of viewers.

right-hand-in-golf-swing

This 1-minute clip to the right I summarize the:

  1. left hand’s role.

  2. right hand’s role.

  3. how the hands work together

START 33:45

END 35:15

.

Conclusion – if you got this far you’re in the epiphany golf zone

Congratulations if you made it through the mind-blowing material above – the epiphany, or epiphanies, you’ve experienced will open up new possibilities for your golf game.

The counter intuitive golf concepts uncovered here will free your hands and body up to be retrained because the mind’s visualization and acceptance of the new concepts will allow the required physical changes to take place now.

As always, I’d love to hear from you about any and all things golf.

Golf Practice Routine – Swing Feel

classic golf swing

Purposeful practice makes perfect. Our purpose is to make golf a reflex sport where our hands and body react instinctively to the momentum of the swinging club head – this is what golf swing feel is all about.

Free golf training videos reside here so you can see the purpose of our golf practice routines as listed below.  [You’ll see that you can practice golf at home as getting the feel for the club head’s momentum doesn’t require hitting balls]:

  1. Getting the club head to swing with its own momentum.
  2. Developing sensitivity to the club head’s momentum.
  3. Reacting to the club head’s momentum in a way that requires no timing [thought-free and reflexive].
  4. Our fluid chain of reactions to the club head’s momentum creates the mechanics we all seek.

If you’d like the online golf training offer from my mentor, Peter Croker, PGA-Australia, please write me.

I also address those of you looking for golf lessons in my area – I’d love to help you.

Free golf training video – This golf backswing creates club head’s OWN momentum:

> MOST folks don’t experience a truly swinging club head & therefore won’t be able to experience a reflex based golf swing.

> Reacting instinctively to the club head’s momentum CREATES the mechanics we seek!

Here’s is my mentor, Peter Croker, PGA Australia, demonstrating our take-back and back sling.

And here’s my 4-min video demonstrating how we gain “feel” on short game before applying to full shots.

golf-chipping-skills
Feel & react to club head momentum on chips before full swings.

Take-back & back-SLING – Creating club head’s own momentum

From my experience now as a golf instructor, and also early-on as a student learning how to become a ball-striker, it is intuitive to guide the club head back from the ball.

However, a counter-intuitive approach is required. That is,

  • the handle must head back first so that the club head lags behind the hands-handle…
  • in a sense the club head is dragged back, not guided or taken back…
    • so that it can then sling back with its own momentum.
      golf-swing-technique-for-take-back
For a reflex-based golf swing, true club head momentum must be created so we can sense and react to that momentum! [7:50 Mark]

This counter-intuitive take-back and back-SLING gets the club head swinging with its own momentum

  • ONLY then can our hands absorb information about the club head’s ever-changing orientation to our body and the ball.
  • ONLY then can the hands-wrists-knees-hips react reflexively and instinctively and fluidly to the club head…
    • to ensure a square-to-target club face through impact, and
    • safe [non-injurious] movement of the body and joints during the swing and especially at impact.

Stated another way, the common intuitive take-back and back swing approach is absolutely counter-productive to purpose of our golf training efforts [that is, our concepts are SO much more than just golf training tips]:

  1. If the contracting [tightening] muscles of the hands-wrists-arms are making the club head go back from the ball, whether quickly or slowly, then the club head won’t be able to gain its own momentum.
  2. If the club head doesn’t have its own momentum, then there is no momentum for the hands to sense!
  3. Therefore, without the club head swinging on its own, there are no stimuli for the wrists-elbows-knees-hips.
  4. If you don’t get the club head slinging back with its own momentum, then you simply won’t be able to make golf a reflex sport…
  5. and you will remain tied to thinking through your golf swing versus reacting reflexively through your golf swing.

In-person lessons [year-round] with Ted

I am a free-lance golf instructor serving at indoor and outdoor facilities Genesee, Oakland and Lapeer counties in Michigan.

I teach Peter Croker’s golf techniques using his step-by-step approach; again, here’s my 4-minute video demonstrating how the chip shot is the foundation of the full swing.

Private lessons are $60 for 75 minutes and Semi-private lessons are $35 per person for 75 minutes.

The side bar of my website’s home page includes my YouTube golf training videos.

Conclusion – Let’s make golf a reflex sport!

We want to play golf by “enjoying the hit”.

That is, we don’t want to play “golf swing”…we want to hit golf shots.

To do so requires inciting and engaging our instincts so we react reflexively to the momentum of the swinging club head.

This requires the club head to sling back freely with its own momentum versus our misguided intuition to guide and position the club.

So a counter-intuitive approach is needed to create true club head momentum.

This approach requires:

  • A club head last [handle first] take-back that leads to…
  • the club head slinging back with its own momentum.
  • Sensing and reacting to the club head’s OWN momentum is what creates the mechanics we seek.

Once we create club head momentum in this manner, then our amazing instinctive abilities are engaged so we move fluidly [and safely] to consistently square the club face to the target through impact.

I’d love to hear from you.

Until then, let’s learn how to Enjoy The Hit so we play golf by hitting golf shots VERSUS playing golf by “playing golf swing”.

Peter Croker – Ben Hogan swing approach

classic golf swing

Overview

You may not know my mentor, Peter Croker, PGA Australia; nor therefore his golf ball striking techniques that incorporate key principles from the Ben Hogan golf swing.

For advanced ball striking, from my experience, the most reliable path is to follow Pete’s golf training approach which

  • breaks down the skills into digestible golf training exercises, and
  • teaches the skills in the proper order so we can blend new skills with previously learned skills.

Let’s learn more about his legendary PGA ball striking and passion for helping folks improve ball striking to the point where they play golf by hitting golf shots VERSUS playing golf by “playing golf swing”.

Peter Croker interview – Including what he taught Arnold Palmer

…and landing on a Golf Digest cover.

Pete is a ball striking legend in Australia, having won 20 PGA Australia tour events and founded his golf academy in the 1990s.

Pete played with, and learned from, and-or taught the great legends of golf; including Ben Hogan, Arnold Palmer, Peter Thomson (among past British Open champions), Greg Norman, Ian Baker Finch, Vijay Singh, et al.

On The Mark blog interview link with Peter Croker, PGA Australia:

Listen for valuable insights, e.g., “golf is a 2-target sport”; this is an epiphany that will set you free at 14:05 mark.

Key markers:

  • 4:30 Interviewer introduces Pete; Pete revisits how he came to give Arnold Palmer 2 lessons and how he landed on the Golf Digest cover in the mid 1990s.
  • 14:05 Pete covers keys to consistent and pure ball striking, including the single root cause of why golfers struggle.
  • 33:00 Pete shares teaching approach-philosophy.

Pretty impressive stuff. For a taste of Pete’s golf training academy, coming next is Pete’s left hand drill.

Conclusion

I trust you gained valuable insight from Pete’s story.

It is important to learn how his amazing golf experiences shaped him and his approach to ball-striking and teaching.

From my experience as his student, and as a teacher using his approach, you have just found the most reliable way to channel your inner ball-striker.

I hope in some way I can be an important part of your golf journey.

Please email me with your golf journey story – I’d love to hear it!

Until next time, let’s go in the direction of playing golf [versus playing “golf swing”] by learning how to “enjoy the hit” so we can play golf by hitting golf shots.

Sincerely,
